Abstract (English)
This qualitative research aimed to explore the history, explain the evolution, and propose guidelines for the preservation and promotion of the unique traditional performing arts of Luang Prabang Province. Data were collected through in-depth interviews. The study found that: The traditional performing arts consist of 3 types : Driving/Chanting (including 9 sub-types such as Khap Thum, Khap Ngom, and Khap Suea Khao Lao ), Dancing (Nang Kaeo Dance, Phralak Phralam Dance ), and Drama (Ipok drama ). Regarding Evolution (Changes): • Driving/Chanting (Khap): The chanting style changed from using narrow, confined expressions to a mixed descriptive style (old and new) , including the organization of chanting groups hired to perform at outside festivals. • Dancing: The Nang Kaeo Dance and the Phralak Phralam Dance had their routines significantly shortened due to time constraints for audiences. The Nang Kaeo Dance was cut from 17 original moves to only 8 moves , and the Phralak Phralam Dance was cut from 10 moves to 3 moves. • Drama: The Ipok drama changed its content to advocate for health education and children's rights, following the needs of society. Consequently, the research results clearly show various reasons for preservation. The main recommendation is that policies and regulations should be appropriately set to promote performing arts nationwide.
