Abstract (English)
English has become the global lingua franca for international communication, education, and professional advancement. This survey research aimed to (1) analyze the English learning behaviors of students, (2) assess their English proficiency levels, and (3) identify the challenges and skills that students wish to improve in learning English as a second language. The sample consisted of 102 undergraduate students (Years 1-3) for the 2018-2019 academic year at the Faculty of Linguistics and Humanities, Savannakhet University. Instruments included a questionnaire on learning behaviors and standardized English proficiency tests. Findings revealed that: Students reported high levels of learning behaviors (mean = 3.51). However, proficiency test results showed that 50% of students failed to meet the passing criteria, with only 2-4% passing. The primary challenges identified were listening (21%), followed by speaking (18%), and pronunciation (17%). The study suggests that despite positive learning behaviors, actual proficiency remains low. Academic leaders and instructors should urgently address these gaps through curriculum enhancement and improved instructional strategies.
